There's something very hopeful about a new bridge on the verge of being connected. I thought you'd enjoy a couple of photos of Brisbane's new Tank Street Bridge, also called the Kurilpa Bridge, from a couple of weeks ago.
As in any city built around bodies of water, bridges are major expression of Brisbane's self-image. The new bridge is for pedestrians and bicycles only, and links the north end of downtown with the major cluster of cultural centers across the river. In this shot, the building on the left is the new Gallery of Modern Art (what Americans would call the Modern Art Museum).
There's something primally satisfying about the moment of connection -- like the moment when a bored tunnel breaks through or the rail line is completed across the mountains. And about the moment just before.
